DESIRE

Hendak seribu daya, tak hendak seribu dalih

If you want something, you'll do absolutely anything to obtain it. But if you don't want something, you'll give a thousand excuses to refrain from it.

MISFORTUNES

Sudah jatuh, ditimpa tangga

After falling, the ladder falls upon you.
After one bad thing another follows.

Buaya.

Jangan disangka air yang tenang tiada buaya.

Do not think that calm water is without crocodiles.A serene façade can hide many secrets.

Tupai melompat,

Setinggi-tinggi tupai melompat, akhirnya jatuh ke tanah juga.

No matter how high the squirrel jumps, it will eventually fall onto the ground. Most of the time, though, this particular proverb has always been associated with criminals, in a way that no matter how clever they try to avoid getting caught, eventually they tend to make mistakes and are entangled.

Sesal dahulu pendapatan

Sesal dahulu pendapatan, Sesal kemudian tiada gunanya
Literal translation: being regretful early will be advantageous, being regretful later is of no use.

The literal translation is not precise. It should be: Prior remorse is useful, regret thereafter is pointless. Meaning: Repentance before an event or action takes place is useful, otherwise regret thereafter is pointless. The idea of  regretting before an action is illogical. Regretting a crime before committing the crime is illogical, but you can be remorseful and therefore repent from committing the crime. One can regret only after the crime. Well, many people seem to live in regrets.
